Columbus, Ohio – March 2012

Envision your life as a college freshman, and in no more than 1500 words, describe how you will maintain your Jewish identity.

The David and Irene Cole Essay Contest of the Columbus Jewish Foundation is open to any Columbus area Jewish high school senior who will graduate this spring. Since the Cole Essay Contest began five years ago, the same insightful question remains: "How I will perpetuate my Jewish knowledge and practice as a college freshman, and why."

Alexi Tallan was the 2011 Cole Essay Contest winner, following in the footsteps of Tehila Wenger (2010), Leah Finkelman (2009), Yael Zinkow (2008), and Ben Kassoy (2007). All were published locally in newspapers and on the web. All were recipients of the First Place $1,000 prize. You could be next!

The essay contest, sponsored by Stuart and Marilyn Cole, in memory of Stuart’s parents, David and Irene Cole z’l, is aimed at challenging students to consider their future Jewish experiences at college. High school seniors who are eager to put their thoughts in writing can access the (new) on-line application by going to the Foundation’s website, Cole Essay Contest page. Applications and essays will be accepted through 8:00 a.m. on Friday, May 4.

According to Stuart Cole, “My father had strong beliefs about the importance of Jewish education that were shared by my mother. Today, Jewish education and identity are an integral part of our lives and the lives of our children: Sara and fiancé Ilan Pearlman, Ely and fiancé Talia Kandel, and newlyweds Rena and Adam Gardin.” The Cole’s professional lives mirror their Jewish values – Marilyn is a clinical social worker at Jewish Family Services and Stuart is an attorney in private practice.

For the past three decades the Coles have been active participants in the Columbus Jewish community. Their charitable pursuits include the Marilyn and Stuart Cole Philanthropic Fund of the Columbus Jewish Foundation, as well as funding of the Columbus Torah Academy Physical Education Cup, Reading Recovery Program and the Hebrew Language Listening Lab. The Coles and Marilyn’s parents, Leonore and Larry z’l Zusman were honored at the Columbus Torah Academy 2011 Annual Scholarship Dinner in December. At the JCC, the Coles have been in the forefront of funding the Yachad Program and the JET Culture Clubs. The Coles are active members of Beth Jacob Congregation and Torat Emet / Main Street Synagogue.
